TikTok Spark Ads: Boosting Organic and Creator Posts
Spark Ads let you put ad spend behind a real TikTok post, either one from your own account or one a creator made for you, instead of uploading a separate ad video. This guide covers how the format works, the three ways to get a post into Ads Manager, how creator authorization codes and their durations work, the rules TikTok sets before you publish, what the metrics mean and how disclosure fits in.
This guide is based on TikTok's Business Help Center articles About Spark Ads, How to create Spark Ads for Manual and Search Campaigns, How to create Spark Ads for Smart+ Campaigns, How to link a TikTok account to ad accounts in Business Center and About Captions and Translations for Spark Ads, plus TikTok's Branded Content Policy. TikTok renames menus often, so treat the click paths as a guide. If you are new to Ads Manager, start with our TikTok ads basics.

What Spark Ads are
TikTok describes Spark Ads as "a native ad format that allows you to leverage organic TikTok posts and their features in your advertising." The key difference from a normal (non-Spark) ad is where the engagement goes: TikTok says Spark Ads make sure that "all views, comments, shares, likes, and follows gained from boosting the video during the promotion are attributed to your organic posts." The likes and comments a paid boost earns stay on the post after the campaign ends.
You can run Spark Ads with:
- posts from your own TikTok account, or
- posts made by other creators, with their authorization.
Because the ad is the post, it looks like the post. TikTok's specifications say the ad's display name and text reflect the chosen organic post and cannot be edited while you create the ad in Ads Manager.
Spark Ads are available for these objectives:
| Buying type | Objectives that support Spark Ads |
|---|---|
| Auction | Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community interaction, App promotion, Conversions, Lead generation, Sales |
| Reach & Frequency | Reach, Traffic, Video Views |
Three ways to get a post into a Spark Ad
Every Spark Ad needs a TikTok account as its identity. TikTok's creation guide lists three ways to source the post:
- A linked account. Link a TikTok account, such as your own business account or a creator's, and choose from its posts while you build the ad.
- A video code. A creator generates a code for one post in the TikTok app and sends it to you.
- A push from Ads Manager. You upload a creative in Ads Manager and publish it to a TikTok account authorized through Business Center.
The first two are pull (you take an existing post into Ads Manager); the third is push (Ads Manager creates the post). In Smart+ campaigns TikTok groups these as two identity types: your own linked account, or authorized accounts and posts. TikTok also says you can mix Spark and non-Spark ads in one ad group, and use creatives from several identities.
Creator posts: authorization codes
A video code is how a creator lets you advertise one specific post without giving you their account. On the creator's side, TikTok's steps are:
- Allow authorized posts for the profile (under Settings and Privacy, then Privacy, or under Creator tools).
- On the post, tap the three dots, then Ad settings, and agree to the advertising terms.
- Turn on the Ad authorization toggle and generate a video code.
- Pick the authorization duration: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days.
- Tap Copy Code and send it to the advertiser.
On your side, go to Tools, then Creative library, then Spark ads posts, click Apply for Authorization and paste the code. You can also add codes inside the ad creation flow, where TikTok supports batch authorization of up to 20 video codes at a time and shows the authorization period under each post.
TikTok presents the custom duration as a way to "meet campaign needs and minimize costs", so agree it with the creator before they generate the code. A few more rules from TikTok:
- Duets and Stitches feature two creators, so you need codes from both: enter the second creator's code first, then the code for the original post.
- Removing a code: a video code can only be deleted once every ad that uses the video has been deleted in Ads Manager.
- Deleting the post: the video has to be un-authorized as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account.
Linked accounts and pushed posts
For your own brand account, or a creator you work with long term, linking the whole account is simpler than collecting codes. Linking is done in TikTok Business Center (Accounts, then TikTok accounts, then View, then Linked accounts) by a member with Admin access. Once linked, the account appears automatically during Spark Ads setup, and anyone with access to the ad account can use it for delivery. TikTok warns that an account which is not a Verified Business Account may be blocked from linking, and recommends verifying all your TikTok accounts. Another Business Center, such as an agency's, can link your TikTok account to its own ad accounts without joining yours.
Pushed posts behave differently from pulled ones. In TikTok's Smart+ guide, once the ad passes review "the pushed video will be published under your linked business account in private mode", and you can make it public manually in the TikTok app. If the account was linked with the Only show as ads permission, people creating Spark Ads cannot switch that setting off when they push content from the linked ad account.
Rules to know before you publish
- The caption is final. TikTok says: "You cannot edit a post's caption after it's been authorized as an ad." Fix typos and links in the post before it is authorized.
- Private posts go public. A private video becomes public once it is used in a campaign, and its privacy status cannot be changed during the promotion.
- Length: the maximum for a post used as a Spark Ad is 10 minutes. Otherwise there are no restrictions on ratio, resolution, file type, duration, bitrate or file size for organic videos.
- Captions: the ad caption can be blank, and account tags, emoji and hashtags are allowed.
- Banned posts are rejected in Ads Manager too. The ad still goes through TikTok's normal ad review, covered in our TikTok ads guide.
- Volume: each Ads Manager account supports a maximum of 10,000 Spark Ads.
What viewers can do and what you can measure
A Spark Ad behaves like a post. TikTok's comparison shows the difference in where taps lead:
| Viewer action | Spark Ad | Non-Spark ad |
|---|---|---|
| Tap the call-to-action or caption | Landing page (if any) | Landing page or app install page |
| Tap the profile photo or name, or swipe left | The account's profile | Landing page or app install page |
| Tap the + on the profile photo | Follows the account | - |
| Tap the sound or music disc | The music page | - |
That changes how the metrics read. For Spark Ads, paid clicks counts only taps on the call-to-action button and the ad caption; for non-Spark ads it also includes the name, profile picture and swipe-left. So a Spark Ad can show fewer paid clicks than a normal ad with the same reach. Spark Ads add paid followers, paid profile visits, music clicks and anchor clicks. Paid likes, shares, comments and followers are counted within 1 day of a person seeing the paid ad.
What reaches your website still has to be measured on your side; our TikTok ads guide covers the pixel and Events API, and our guide to UTM tracking links shows how to tag the landing page URL.
Auto captions and translations
TikTok can show auto-generated captions on Spark Ads and let viewers translate the title, description, subtitles and the text on some interactive add-ons. TikTok lists the feature for all objectives in the United States and European Union, in the For You, Profile and Following feeds; text inside the video or image itself is not translated. If an ad already uses Translate and Dub, this feature is turned off for that ad. To opt out for specific ads or the whole ad account, you send TikTok the ad account ID (and ad IDs) through an opt-out request, and the change applies to your next campaign.
Disclosure when a creator is paid
Paying to boost a creator's post does not change what the creator owes their audience. TikTok's Branded Content Policy says that "When posting branded content, you must enable the commercial content disclosure toggle," which labels the post automatically. The policy also asks that the product be clear from the video or caption itself, without viewers having to visit the profile or a link, and reminds creators that laws can require disclosures beyond the label.
Check the toggle is on before you request a code, because the caption cannot be changed once the post is authorized as an ad. What the law expects from you as the brand, in the US and UK, is covered in our influencer marketing disclosure guide. If the creator is promoting products from your TikTok Shop, see our TikTok Shop guide for how Shop and creators fit together.
A checklist for a creator Spark Ad
This is our suggestion, built on TikTok's rules above:
- Agree the authorization duration (7, 30, 60 or 365 days) in writing, matched to the campaign dates plus some room to keep running a post that works.
- Agree whether the creator may delete or edit the post, given that it has to be un-authorized first and the caption is locked.
- Confirm the post is final: caption, links, hashtags and the commercial content disclosure toggle.
- For Duets and Stitches, ask for both creators' codes.
- If the post is private, agree with the creator that it will become public once it runs.
- Record each code, its expiry date and the ad IDs it is used in, so you know what stops when.
- Compare Spark and non-Spark ads on conversions or cost per result rather than paid clicks, since the click definitions differ.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Spark Ads and normal TikTok ads?
A Spark Ad runs an existing TikTok post from a real account, and the views, likes, comments, shares and follows it earns stay on that post. A non-Spark ad is a creative uploaded only for advertising, and taps on its name or profile photo go to your landing page instead of a profile.
How long does a TikTok Spark Ads code last?
The creator chooses the authorization duration when generating the code: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. The period shows under each post in Ads Manager.
Can I edit the caption of a Spark Ad?
No. TikTok says you cannot edit a post's caption after it has been authorized as an ad, and the display name and text come from the organic post. Make the caption final before authorizing.
Can I use a Duet or Stitch as a Spark Ad?
Yes, but you need video codes from both creators: enter the second creator's code first, then the code for the original post.
Do Spark Ads need a branded content disclosure?
If a creator is paid or otherwise connected to your brand, TikTok's Branded Content Policy requires them to turn on the commercial content disclosure toggle. Laws in your market may require more.
A Spark Ad that sends people to a slow or confusing site wastes the boost. See our website development and website maintenance services and all our services, or email [email protected].
